Pumping Up The Volume Is Pumping Up The Damage
Hey guys, listen up. When parents tell their kids to turn the volume down otherwise they’ll go deaf…they’re right. Far from being an old wives’ tale, noise-induced hearing loss is a reality – and it’s a growing problem.
Research figures put 15% of Americans (26 million people) between 20 and 69 have high-frequency hearing loss due to loud sounds or noise at work, at leisure and at home.Noise-induced hearing loss is also affecting more and more children and young adults, with around one in eight children suffering from it. The sad thing is that it’s cumulative and permanent – but entirely preventable.
It's decibel danger out there. It's a loud, loud world and many sounds can be dangerous to our health.A normal conversation is around 50 to 70 decibels, whilst a music concert can ramp up to 130 decibels of sound.Noise levels of over 85 decibels will cause hearing damage over time, whilst a noise of 110 decibels can cause hearing damage after only 90 seconds of exposure, say the experts. Their research indicates that noise-induced hearing loss is possible from even a brief exposure to a very loud noise or from consistent exposure to noise of moderate level like an MP3 player or noisy toy.
Amazing as the human body is, our auditory system doesn’t have a limiting mechanism to prevent dangerous acoustic levels from being transmitted to the inner ear.Nerve cells are irreparably damaged when over exposed to high intensity sounds.
Everyday sounds can spell trouble. From motorbikes and snowmobiles (110 decibels), to chainsaws and lawnmowers (90 decibels), to house alarms, sirens, hairdryers and planes - we can't control any of these sounds. We also put ourselves in amped-up situations like sports events, video arcades, music concerts and some movies, while at home, the volume on the televisions, computers and stereos is often so loud that a ringing telephone goes unnoticed.
And while parents might welcome the relative peace when their kids listen to music through earphones – that’s potentially a one-way ticket to hearing impairment, warn experts.Research done in Britain found that over 66% of young people who regularly use MP3 players were likely to face premature hearing loss.If a person listens to their MP3 player or Ipod at high volume every day for over an hour, they are putting themselves at risk of permanent hearing loss after five years.Hearing damage can begin at 85 decibels, and an MP3 player at its highest level will produce sound of around 105 decibels. An important consideration is that for every 10 decibels, sound intensity increases tenfold.
The problem is, most young people don’t realise the harmful effects of noise. Because regular listening to personal music players at high volume often doesn’t have any immediate effect on a young person’s hearing, they feel invincible.Although the damage is done, the effects are only felt later in life and can't be undone.
According to the American Academy of Audiology, around one child in eight has noise-induced hearing loss. That’s a permanent disability that could have been prevented, and hearing aids may be an option.
So when you hear your parents ask you to please turn the volume down – be grateful you can still hear them – and listen up! You may not be able to hear them (or your favourite music) in the future.
