What To Expect When Having Your Hearing Tested
Having a ear and hearing test is vital if you believe that you are beginning to lose your hearing. Having a hearing test is also crucial if you begin to acquire tinnitus which is a persistent sound within the inner ear. This is generally audible ringing but can be may other types of sound too. The 1st step for a hearing or tinnitus test is for your doctor to physically examine your ear. Using an instrument with a light at the end, called an auriscope or otoscope, they will look for anything that isn't standard, including; discharge, a bulging ear drum, perforated ear drum or an object that could be blocking the ear. You can be asked about any agony or discomfort which you could be having.

Murmuring or employing a ticking watch. One ear at a time will be blocked and the nurse or doctor will test your hearing with sounds of disparate volumes. In the whispering test, you might have to copy the words out loud, when you hear them murmured.
Tuning fork. A tuning fork is a Y-shaped metal object which, when tapped, produces sound waves at a fixed pitch. It's usually used for tuning musical instruments. Doctors use a tuning fork by tapping it on their elbow or knee, to make it vibrate, then holding it at each side of your head. It's going to be held 1st in the air close by your ear, to discover how well you hear sounds that are transmitted thru air vibrations. Then it may be held to the bone behind your ear (mastoid bone) to discover how well you can hear when the waves are broadcast to your internal ear thru the bone.
Audiometry. In this test you are given earphones to wear, which are attached to a machine. Sounds of different volumes (loudness) are played through the earphones, and you have to indicate whether you heard them. You might have to raise a hand or click on a button. Children could have to move a colored block.
Bone oscillator. A slightly different test may be employed to test how well you hear sounds that are sent through the bone instead of the air. This uses an instrument called a bone oscillator placed against the bone behind your ear.
Your hearing might be fine and tinnitus is frequently an indication of another health issue that can be unrelated to hearing. As an example in can be damage to the ear itself, a prior head injury or changes to blood pressure in the arteries near to the ear.
